There are two ways to the functions and settings: pull down menus and the tool bar

Once your student learns the various document tools, s/he can create a document that best supports his/her learning needs.
(Every time you start a new document, it will use the settings currently saved as the default setting). Launch the application and an untitled document will appear on your desktop.
Once your untitled document is open, type this sentence (Deliberately misspell the word "family.")
Last summer I went on a camping trip with my famly.
As each word is completed with a spacebar or punctuation mark, the application will speak the word (if you want each letter to be spoken you must select it every time WriteOut Loud is opened; this is not a default setting).
If the student misspells a word, the menu bar will flash red and there will be an alert sound. This is the built-in spelling monitor. If an unfamiliar word is typed, it will also cause a mispell cue to occur. Once in the "Check Spelling" window, if you want the application to add the word to the built-in spelling dictionary, select "Learn" for the highlighted word.
